Has CBD won you over? Are you looking forward to trying out all the beneficial properties you’ve read about on the web or been told about by friends?
Cannabidiol, which came to us from alternative medicine thousands of years ago, seems to be able to treat a variety of conditions and diseases, without causing any side effects.
But what is the correct dosage of CBD?
Simply put: how much CBD is needed to achieve these miraculous results?
The fact that it can treat several conditions is precisely one of the key factors to consider. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not made any official recommendations, so it is very important to evaluate each individual case, starting with the condition it is intended to treat.
Want to reduce anxiety? Soothe inflammation? Promote insomnia? Relieve pain?
The dosage of CBD depends on a variety of factors including the intensity of the disorder, physical characteristics, metabolism, whether or not other medications are taken, and the formulation of the individual product chosen.
You can well understand that there is no standard rule for all situations!
As with any other type of treatment, following a certain modality of use is essential to achieve the goal for which you bought the product. Although CBD is not as psychoactive as THC, so it doesn’t give you any highs even when highly concentrated, there are factors to consider in order to make the most of its effectiveness. Let’s find out together what the right CBD dosage is for you.

Why take CBD?
Before discussing numbers and figures, let us take a step back. CBD is one of over one hundred cannabinoids produced by the hemp plant, also called cannabis. These natural substances have gained a considerable reputation because they are able to influence the human body in many ways.
Cannabinoids interact with the so-called endocannabinoid system, a system responsible for regulating many physiological and cognitive functions. By interacting with this system, CBD is able to act on mood, appetite, sleep, pain, anxiety, fertility and even movement.
This is why so many other people like you have already decided to try CBD. Many do it out of curiosity, but so many others are looking for an alternative cure to an ailment after unsuccessfully trying the traditional medicine route.
Now that we have explained the ‘why’, let’s delve into the ‘how’ of taking CBD.
How many mg of CBD to take per day?
According to current scientific knowledge, the average or standard dosage of CBD is between 10 mg and 100 mg per day. This amount is generally effective in reducing symptoms such as pain, inflammation, anxiety, depression, arthritis, certain mental disorders, fibromyalgia, and even in helping with weight loss.
However, it is advisable to start with a minimum dose, such as 1 mg or 2 mg per day, and gradually increase until the desired effect is achieved. A micro-dose could then range from 1 mg CBD up to 15-20 mg.
If the health condition is very serious, a macro-dosing of up to 800 mg CBD can also be considered on medical advice.
In any case, it is advisable to consult your doctor or a specialist in the field to find the most suitable dosage for your specific case. As we said, CBD dosage depends on a wide range of factors that all need to be considered and weighed up.
Table for CBD dosage according to gender and weight
Just as all CBD products are different, so are the consumers. Each person has characteristics that distinguish them and these details affect the CBD dosage.
Personal factors to be evaluated include:
- Gender: your body chemistry is very important because your metabolism affects the assimilation of the product;
- Height and weight: your weight and body structure are crucial in determining the amount of product needed to see any results;
- Age: years also affect metabolism, just like gender;
- Condition to be treated: for treating mild symptoms, certain products are more suitable, while for severe symptoms you need to move towards high concentrations of active ingredients.
The CBD dosage table we have created below is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Always bearing in mind that CBD dosage may vary depending on symptom severity, individual sensitivity and other factors, we make an estimate.
Dosage table:
Dosage level | Men (mg/kg) | Women (mg/kg) |
Low | 0.3 – 0.5 | 0.1 – 0.3 |
Medium | 0.5 – 0.9 | 0.4 – 0.7 |
High | 1.1 – 1.5 | 0.8 – 1.1 |
For some products, it is easier to calculate the dosage of CBD. A little more complex, however, is figuring out the right dosage in products such as oil or creams. 5% CBD oil contains 500 mg of active ingredient in a 10 ml bottle. Knowing also that a 10ml bottle contains about 200 drops of CBD oil, you also know that each drop contains 2mg. Knowing this detail, you can find the right dosage using the dropper pipette of the bottle in which the oil is sold.
At this point you can calculate how many drops you need to reach your goal.

How many mg of CBD to relax?
One study evaluated the effects of CBD during a simulated public speaking test. This activity generally elicits very high levels of anxiety, which is why it was chosen to evaluate the efficacy of cannabidiol. Subjects were given daily doses of 150, 300 and 600mg, in addition to placebo, of course.
The dosage of CBD for anxiety that produced the greatest results, and was therefore able to reduce anxiety, was the 300mg dosage. In contrast, the researchers did not notice much difference between 150mg, 600mg and the placebo.
This study was therefore able to confirm both the anxiolytic properties of CBD and the fact that correct dosage is better than too high a dosage, a topic we will return to shortly when discussing overdose.
We would always like to point out that the correct dosage also depends on the severity of the disorder to be treated, because even anxiety does not always occur with the same intensity or cadence.
The anxiolytic properties of CBD are also useful in more severe cases such as depression, combined with the fact that cannabidiol is able to stimulate serotonin, the so-called ‘feel-good hormone’.
How many drops of CBD for sleep?
We have just finished talking about the calming effect of CBD, which helps both during wakefulness and during the hours spent in bed. People who are anxious find it difficult to have a deep and peaceful sleep, which is what happens when they are more relaxed.
However, CBD does not only work at this level. It also works to bring the body more quickly into the REM phase, the phase in which sleep is heaviest, making it more difficult to wake up. This allows you to sleep for several hours and upon waking up feel more rested.
Furthermore, by alleviating situations of pain and inflammation, it makes it much easier to sleep in individuals who would otherwise find it difficult to sleep due to too much pain.
Experts have also tested different dosages in this field. Significant results have emerged with a CBD dose of 75mg per day in patients with anxiety and insomnia problems.
But we mentioned that CBD oil can have different concentrations.
How many drops of CBD for sleep with a 20% oil? The recommended dosage is 3-4 drops of oil to be taken up to 3 times in a day.
Of course, you should also seek advice from your doctor if you are already undergoing treatment for insomnia.
And how many drops of CBD at 10%? Given the lower concentration, you can start with 4 drops up to a maximum of 3 times a day. You can gradually increase the dose until the result is achieved.
Finally, how many drops of 5% CBD? Since it is recommended for first-time users of cannabidiol, you can start with 2 drops in the morning and two drops in the evening, up to 3-4 drops 3 times a day.

How much CBD for pain?
The amount of CBD needed to relieve pain varies depending on several factors, including the type of pain, severity, individual sensitivity, body weight, intake of other medications, and method of intake.
For mild pain, it is possible to start with a dose of 10-20 mg CBD per day. It is very different if the pain is severe.
According to studies conducted on migraine pain, for instance, a dose of 100 mg did not prove sufficient to relieve the pain. While when the dose was increased to 200 mg per day, the pain was reduced by more than half.
Of course, in certain cases, scientists have also considered CBD compounds and other substances capable of influencing a particular type of body response. For instance, the combined action of CBD and THC proved to be very effective for the treatment of cluster headache.
For arthritis pain, on the other hand, a study on rats showed that a 6.2 mg dose of CBD per day gave the same results as a 62.3 mg dose per day.
CBD in the diet
The endocannabinoid system, the one on which CBD works, is also very important in regulating metabolism and food intake. This was stated in a study conducted on cannabidiol’s ability to decrease body gain.
The test was conducted on rats that were given 2.5 to 5mg per kg every day. The results showed that both doses produced a significant reduction in weight gain, however, the best results emerged with the 5mg/kg per day dose.
This experiment showed that CBD can influence body weight gain through the CB2 receptor of the endocannabinoid system. More studies on CBD for weight loss are obviously needed, but these results already represent an achievement.
According to research to date, it appears that CBD reduces hunger in most people who use it and also makes it less difficult to resist the desire to eat. Also contributing to this is its relaxing action and, above all, its ability to improve mood, eliminating the stress that very often causes people to overeat.
Is there a risk of taking too much CBD?
Like any other natural substance, if you do not follow the right directions for use, you may be taking more CBD than you really need.
What happens in this case? Do you risk running into side effects?
Fortunately, with CBD you do not run this risk. Scientific studies have shown that too high a dose does not cause contraindications but is simply ineffective on a par with a placebo.
In any case, according to data collected by scientists so far, the body can tolerate up to 1,500 mg of CBD per day. However, it is clear that every person is different and it is always best to take only the correct dosage of CBD.
In general, CBD overdose is generally considered non-toxic and non-fatal. However, some unpleasant side effects may occur.
Side effects in case of overdose include:
- Drowsiness;
- Dry mouth;
- Nausea;
- Diarrhoea;
- Low blood pressure.
Then there are less common side effects:
- Headaches;
- Dizziness;
- Loss of appetite;
- Anxiety.
In most cases, side effects have occurred due to interaction with other drugs. In this case, the dose of CBD is decisive, which is why it is always a good idea to seek advice from your doctor or a specialist if you want to use this remedy as a supplement to an existing treatment.
What research says about CBD
The results from scientific research are very encouraging as CBD has always been well tolerated by different subjects and no serious side effects have ever surfaced. This means that we are talking about a substance that is safe for the body.
During the studies, various dosages were administered to document the body’s reaction. According to an update on the safety and side effects of cannabidiol, scientists started with a minimum of 20mg to a maximum of 1,500mg per day. This was the highest dose ever administered for the treatment of chronic pain and was well tolerated. One teenager, for example, was treated with this dosage of CBD for as long as 4 weeks.
Thus, there is no universal dosage to suit everyone, but even high dosages are well tolerated by the body. This does not, of course, mean overdoing it in order to achieve the result faster, as we will soon see that CBD does not work that way.
